Google Tensor Chip Transition From Samsung To TSMC Foundry

Google Tensor is a custom System-on-Chip (SoC) processor designed by Google for its Pixel devices to tightly integrate AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities directly into the hardware. Google 1st generation (G1) tensor chip was launched on October 5, 2021 alongside the pixel 6 series (pixel 6 and pixel 6pro), It was followed by 

  • Tensor G2 chip in 2022 with pixel 7 series (pixel 7, pixel 7pro, pixel 7a, and pixel fold)
  • Tensor G3 chip in 2023 with pixel 8 series (pixel 8, pixel 8pro, and pixel 8a).
  • Tensor G4 in 2024 with pixel 9 series (pixel 9, pixel 9pro, pixel 9pro XL, pixel 9pro fold and pixel 9a).

Since it's debut, Samsung has been the common manufacturer of Google Tensors.

The Samsung Foundry is a semiconductor manufacturing division of Samsung that designs technologies, IP, and high-volume manufacturing capabilities for customers. Samsung Foundry have been responsible for manufacturing all Google's Tensor chip from G1 to G4, using advanced nodes.

Now Google is moving from Samsung foundry to TSMC ahead of its Pixel 10's tensor chip production.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company limited (TSMC) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company. They are the largest independent semiconductor foundry.

The pixel 10 lineup series, as tensor G5 will be the first of it kind Google chip to be made by TSMC, the same foundry that produces chips for Qualcomm, Mediatek, and Apple.
