Trump Set To Speak with Chinese President Xi Over TikTok's Deal
Trump stated on Friday July 4, aboard Air Force One that he would be speaking to Chinese President Xi by next week - possibly Monday or Tuesday, to conclude on Tiktok deal.
Tiktok is a social media and online video platform owned by Chinese Internet Company Bytedance .
During President Biden's administration, on April 24, 2024, Biden signed into law, the Protecting Americas from Foreign Adversary Controlled Application Act. The act gave Bytedance (Tiktok parent company ) a nine month deadline until January 19, 2025, to either divest Tiktok or face ban from operating in the U.S.
Bytedance appealed before the supreme Court, but the Protecting Americas from Foreign Adversary Controlled Application Act was upheld.
However, Trump who won the November, 2024 presidential election requested for an extension in December , 2024, ahead of his inauguration as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025, in order to give his incoming administration time to deliberate on the matter.
As of January 18, 2025, Tiktok services across the United States was shutdown and the app removed from app stores.
After Trump inauguration as the president of the United States, he signed an executive order to revive Tiktok for 75 days, with a deadline of April 5, 2025, for Bytedance to comply with the policy to either divest or be banned.
On April 4, 2025, Trump signed a second executive order for another 75 days, extending the deadline to June 19, 2025.
Again in June 19, 2025, Trump signed a third executive order for additional 90 days extension with a new deadline of September 17, 2025.
During an interview session with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said that he have found wealthy people to buy tiktok and avoid ban. In an attempt to enquire more on the buyers, Trump refused to disclose the buyer's name but instead promised more details in two weeks time.
